Andre Braugher, renowned for his roles as Captain Raymond Holt in the popular comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Detective Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Street, has passed away at the age of 61.
The actor succumbed to a brief illness on Monday, a confirmation made by his publicist.
Braugher’s distinctive deep voice became iconic, propelling him to fame on the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street, which aired from 1992 to 1998. His outstanding portrayal of the determined and arrogant Detective Frank Pembleton earned him an Emmy in 1998.
However, it was his portrayal of the deadpan Captain Raymond Holt in the hit comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine, alongside Andy Samberg for eight seasons, that truly catapulted him to stardom. He secured two Critics Choice Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and garnered four Emmy nominations for his role as Holt, the precinct’s no-nonsense, Black, and gay boss.
Born in 1962 in Chicago, Braugher, the youngest of four children, pursued theater on a Stanford scholarship before furthering his education at the Juilliard School for drama. His cinematic debut came in 1989’s Glory, where he played a Union soldier in one of the earliest African American regiments of the American Civil War, earning the film three Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for his co-star Denzel Washington.
In the subsequent years, Braugher played various roles in television films, even participating in revivals of classic crime series like Kojak, before gaining acclaim in the police drama Homicide: Life on the Street.
A 2010 Guardian article hailed Braugher’s character, Detective Pembleton, as “the smartest, sharpest master of the art of interrogation,” earning him an Emmy in 1998.
His second Emmy came in 2006 for the miniseries Thief, where he portrayed the leader of a heist juggling high-stakes operations with family struggles.
Over his three-decade career, Braugher received a total of 11 Emmy nominations and often embraced roles revolving around the military and police, including his beloved character in Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
In 2020, he spoke to Variety about the challenges of portraying police on television, expressing concerns about the pervasive portrayal of law enforcement breaking the law in the name of defending it.
Following the news of his passing, former co-stars and colleagues, including Terry Crews and Chelsea Peretti from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, paid heartfelt tributes on social media, reflecting on Braugher’s wisdom, kindness, and irreplaceable talent.
